Keyhole Bitch Spay

Keyhole Bitch Spay

Keyhole Bitch Spay (information sheet).

We now offer keyhole (laparoscopic) bitch spays.Suitable for bitches weighing over 10 kgs ,and especially good for those with an excitable nature as it makes the postop care so much easier.

Using keyhole surgery, instead of a 5 to 8 cm incision the operation is performed
through two 5mm incisions that naturally cause less pain post operatively and heal much
quicker allowing a rapid return to normal function. For the surgeon laparoscopy provides
excellent visualisation with magnification of the internal organs, allowing for controlled
cutting.

What are the advantages?

Firstly, and most importantly the procedure is less painful than traditional surgery, though you
have to remember it is still an operation and your pet will have mild discomfort which will be
controlled with appropriate pain relief before, during ,and after the procedure.
Recovery is quicker and full return to normal exercise is expected sooner than with
conventional surgery.
Wound management is so much easier as the surgery is done through two or three very small
incisions. These smaller wounds naturally heal up more swiftly. This can be a distinct
advantage in young bouncy dogs post operatively.

What is the difference between ovarectomy and ovarohysterectomy?

With a conventional spay both ovaries and the womb are removed .This is an ovarohysterectomy.

If keyhole surgery is chosen, the ovaries are removed ,but the womb is left alone. This is an ovarectomy.
It has been shown there is no benefit to removing the dogs womb at a spay operation.
We are proud to be able to offer this advanced procedure for your pet,and should you require
any further information please call us or arrange a free preoperative consultation .
